Yu Jihui: “A Stinking Old Ninth – A Tale of the Coal Capital” (updated on July 2020)

and so it was warm and comfortable. The Northeast

was very cold in winter and therefore, it was very

popular). They were sound asleep, while the rest

were sitting on chairs smoking. They were in charge

of the class struggle. But in fact, they had nothing to

do. What they were doing every day was smoking

and lying on Kang, sleeping. Once an event occurred

about class struggle, they would come forward to

deal with it. The students took me to a worker master

who was about fifty years old. He was the main

leader in the revolutionary committee of our school.

He had a big head and two short legs. I nicknamed

him ‘Dwarf’. He was very proud of his background

and he would often say triumphantly, “I’m an

uneducated worker. I’m an illiterate. Before

Liberation, my family was very poor. I couldn’t go to

school. I once even begged for a meal. It is the Party

that saved me. It is Chairman Mao that saved me.
