the Gong Ren Shi Fu (worker masters).

The revolutionary committee (the leadership) of

our school was set up in 1968 and consisted mainly

of two parties: the original school head masters and

some worker masters.

In 1968, Mao Zedong issued an order stating that

the working class was to occupy all superstructures.

As a result, some coal mine workers went into our

school and became members of the revolutionary

committee. They were the main school leaders. They

had the final say and could decide everything for the

school. We called them Gong Ren Shi Fu (worker

master). The original school headmasters had

become puppets. As the students took me into the

worker master’s office, I saw a group of coal workers

there, most of whom were lying on Kang (a large bed

made of wood, bricks and earth. It could be heated,
