Sports teachers and music teachers belonged to

the same teaching group and were in the same office.

It was said that sports and music had no boundaries,

and that they were of one family. Our office was

called the ‘sport and music office’. There was a

woman music teacher in our office nicknamed Black

Peony. She was nicknamed Black Peony because she

was black. Her skin was black indeed, but she was

very beautiful. She was in her late twenties. Her

husband was far away in the border area between

Soviet Union and China and worked as a sports

teacher in a middle school there. She lived alone in

the coal worker’s area in a small wooden house. At

that time, she was applying to be transferred to her

husband’s school to be reunited with him.

When my story had spread over the school, most

of the teachers had laughed themselves to tears. They
