Yu Jihui: “A Stinking Old Ninth – A Tale of the Coal Capital” (updated on July 2020)

Ninths, and except Big Li, we were all Da Guang

Gun. The four of us had same fate and sympathized

with each other. On weekends we would play chess,

or playing cards, or music instruments or stayed

together chatting. Sometimes we drank. We

especially enjoyed listening to Big Li’s stories. He

was an excellent storyteller. His stories were always

about women. He often ridiculed us as a group of

monks. As he had a wife, he understood women. His

stories often made us too excited to sleep, but we

enjoyed them very much and would urge him to tell

more stories. He seemed to have endless stories

about women and loved to tell them. He was always

energetic and would tell us stories vividly. One day

he said to us, “Do you know Lao Song?”

                       “No, we don’t,” we said.

“He is our leader, and a glorious Communist

               Party Member-”
