Yu Jihui: “A Stinking Old Ninth – A Tale of the Coal Capital” (updated on July 2020)

“Nonsense! If you really love him, why did you

throw his book on to the floor? Now I would like to

tell you a true story. One day it was raining cats and

dogs. After the rain, the ground was full of water. An

old worker was walking through a piece of land

which was full of water. Suddenly he fell to the

ground. He was carrying Chairman Mao’s Red Book.

He would rather soak his whole body in water than

make the Red Book dirty. He stretched his hand with

Mao’s book high in the air and kept it clean. Why?

Because he loves Chairman Mao. If you were the old

worker, you would have thrown Chairman Mao’s

Red Book into the water and kept your clothes clean!

Compared to the old worker, do you feel ashamed of

               yourself?”

“Yes, I do. I’m guilty of my crime for which I

deserve to die ten thousand deaths! I’ll learn from the

               old worker…”
