Yu Jihui: “A Stinking Old Ninth – A Tale of the Coal Capital” (updated on July 2020)
“Soapy,” she said. “I trust you very much, which
is why I’ve told you my history. This is a secret of
mine. You must keep it confidential and never reveal
it to anybody or I’ll be in trouble.”
“I swear I’ll never reveal it.”
“Now I think you can understand why I don’t
want to make my mother sad. She has had a hard life.
She is afraid I’ll follow her bad luck and suffer
hardship. She knows that I’m an honest girl and can
be easily cheated. You are a teacher of a middle
school. What’s more, you are a sports teacher. You
are at the bottom of the social ladder. But I have
gone so far as to love you. She will think I have been
cheated by you. Otherwise how could I have fallen in
love with a man at bottom of the social ladder? I’m
afraid she won’t agree to let me marry you.”
I lowered my head and blushed.
