Yu Jihui: “A Stinking Old Ninth – A Tale of the Coal Capital” (updated on July 2020)

“Yes, I used to be a member of our school

team… I mean, when I was at university, my alma

mater, I was a member of the university team and

was the first important team member…”

“Do you feel proud that you were a basketball

               player?” she asked.

“Yes, I think so. I’m a good basketball player.”

“That’s worthless. What’s good in being a good

basketball player?” She said. “You should make

progress in politics. I was told you are backwards in

politics. You never read newspapers, never read

Mao’s books, you are not a Party member and you

were not even a Communist Youth League Member.

When you were at university, you even didn’t apply

for the membership of the Communist Youth League.

You just buried yourself in books. Since you became

a teacher in the middle school, you have given

people the impression that you are not concerned
