Yu Jihui: “A Stinking Old Ninth – A Tale of the Coal Capital” (updated on July 2020)
Big Wang laughed again and then she said, “It’s
too early for you to say so. You haven’t understood
me yet.”
“I think I understood you from the moment I first
looked at you! You are as transparent as a crystal.”
She smiled and said, “You are not slow of
tongue and clumsy of speech as the Old Aunt said.
You’ve got a glib tongue and are good at ingratiating
yourself with a woman. But fine words butter no
parsnips.”
I realized that I had stroked the fur the wrong
way. I flushed. I had to be careful with my tongue,
otherwise what was sure to be gained would be lost.
A moment later she said,
“Do you know what impression you first gave
me?”
“I don’t know.”
