Yu Jihui: “A Stinking Old Ninth – A Tale of the Coal Capital” (updated on July 2020)

I was left on the platform. Beside me stood the

big man, my basket buddy. He sympathized with me

but could do nothing to help me. He forced a smile

and persuaded me not to commit suicide. Then he

               left.

“I’ll commit suicide! I will! I mean what I say!

Please tell my leader why!” I shouted as loudly as I

could for my basketball buddy to hear, but I didn’t

know whether he heard it or not.

I had just been checked by Company

Commander in broad daylight. Was this an act of

violence? It was the same act as Whitewashing. I was

a big, strong man, but I had been Whitewashed by a

woman. It was a great shame! I would commit

suicide. I would! I was ashamed and it was insulting!

I would remember it all my life. I wanted revenge! I

was burning with rage. The news quickly spread

through our school and the whole coal mine. People
