Yu Jihui: “A Stinking Old Ninth – A Tale of the Coal Capital” (updated on July 2020)
As a sports teacher, I felt my life was better than
when I was a Chinese teacher. I had an ambition. I
was determined to set up two basketball teams - one
boys’ team and one girls’ team. I would train them
systematically so as to win the championship in the
city’s middle school basketball competition. I
selected some tall boys and girls with good physical
constitution to be trained. They all were coal
worker’s descendants. They were not afraid of
hardships and fatigue. They had special interest in
playing basketball. The basketball players
worshipped me. They thought of me as their idol.
Every afternoon after class I would train them
together. I trained them seriously and they took it
seriously too. They made quick progress. Half a year
later, the men’s team won the second place while the
girls’ team won the third place in the city middle
school basketball match. I was happy. The school
