Yu Jihui: “A Stinking Old Ninth – A Tale of the Coal Capital” (updated on July 2020)
She knew it would get colder and colder as she
travelled north. By midnight, she put on the cotton
coat she brought with her. But when she found I was
trembling with cold, she took off the cotton coat and
covered me with it. But she was trembling with cold
now. I was moved to tears.
I was thirsty and needed water. She brought
some water in a bottle. She gave all of the water to
me. The closer we got to our destination, the colder it
was. Though I was covered with a cotton coat, I still
felt chilly, and flushed from fever. Soon I went into a
coma again. When I woke again, she was tightly
holding me. I was moved again to tears. Fortunately,
we were very close to our destination. She told me I
had been unconscious and trembling with cold. So
she had been hugging me all the way to the city—
Man Zhuoli. Soon the train pulled into the station.
