Yu Jihui: “A Stinking Old Ninth – A Tale of the Coal Capital” (updated on July 2020)

I happily took her offerings and began to wolf it

down. I told her about my story. She sighed and said,

“So, you are not a transient from a village. You

turned out to be a university graduate. That’s great!

I’m sure you can win the case.” She seemed very

               sympathetic towards me.

The further north we traveled, the colder it

would get. (China is located in the northern

hemisphere. So it would be colder and colder as you

travel north) By midnight, I had developed a high

fever. I was trembling all over with cold. I felt as

though I was burning hot and kept groaning. The

woman came to me and felt my forehead. She uttered

a cry of surprise and hugged me tightly. I felt warm

and comfortable in her embrace and soon I went into

a coma and knew nothing. The next morning, when I

woke up, I found that I had been covered with a

cotton coat. She had brought a cotton coat with her.
