Yu Jihui: “A Stinking Old Ninth – A Tale of the Coal Capital” (updated on July 2020)
in the middle. I took a few steps forward and felt like
I was a criminal facing a group of judges. The
atmosphere was very serious. I looked at the political
supervisor nervously, waiting to be questioned.
“Have you received a letter from White Swan?”
the political supervisor asked me straightforwardly,
while the others fixed their eyes on me sternly. I was
startled and scared. I immediately realized this was a
small denounce meeting; they would force me to tell
the truth and they would denounce me mercilessly if
I refused to do so. This, no doubt, was a trial to me. I
secretly exhorted myself - I had to be staunch and by
no means give in. I had to conceal the secret between
White Swan and me. But I was a coward by nature.
Though I made up my mind to stand up to the test, I
               replied, trembling:
                       “Y…es.”
“What does she say in the letter?”
