knew it was Elephant who started the rumour. She

not only cooked up absurd stories about me but also

encouraged Great Smoker to “attack” me. She had

told her that Soapy was honest and timid. So long as

she pursued me, she could win me. She said Soapy

would, by no means, escape from her.

Since then, Great Smoker had become my

shadow and forever followed me. She not only went

to the school to entangle me but also went to my

dormitory to embarrass me. One night I was mending

my socks in my bedroom and she came in. She took

a chair and put it in the front of me. She sat on it,

asking me to speak to her. I was very angry. I threw

my socks away and rushed out of the bedroom to

avoid her. I walked up and down in the street. Two

hours later I went back to my bedroom and she had

gone.
