Yu Jihui: “A Stinking Old Ninth – A Tale of the Coal Capital” (updated on July 2020)

So I had to keep the appointment. One late

evening, Elephant took me to the park. The night had

already fallen and everywhere was in darkness. After

we went into the park, Elephant pointed at a woman

standing close to an electric pole and said that was

the woman I was going on a date with. In the

distance and under the dim light, the woman seemed

all right. Elephant asked what my impression was. I

said it was not too bad. The woman seemed short.

Her appearance under the dim light was not clear, but

all right. It was dim. I couldn’t see how she dressed

herself. She stood there with a cigarette between her

lips. When she saw Elephant approaching with me,

she quickly threw the cigarette away and greeted us

with a smile. When we got close enough to her,

               Elephant introduced me to her,

                       “This is Soapy…”
