Yu Jihui: “A Stinking Old Ninth – A Tale of the Coal Capital” (updated on July 2020)

One day, Norodom Sihanouk came to the coal

city to visit. It was an important event. The music

written by Sihanouk was repeatedly broadcasted. The

leader of our coal mine organised the workers of the

whole mine to welcome him, but still it did not seem

warm enough. A sea of people was needed to show

China’s warmth. So the students of the school were

ordered to join the workers to welcome the dearest

international friend. The coal mine was full of people.

Red flags waved in the wind. Everywhere there were

voices cheering and laughing, as if an important

festival was being celebrated. But I was still locked

in the room. I was not allowed to join this activity.

A few days later, I was released. The event of

listening to the Voice of America was settled by

               leaving it unsettled.
