Yu Jihui: “A Stinking Old Ninth – A Tale of the Coal Capital” (updated on July 2020)

One week later, we went to Shenyang, the capital

of the Liaoning province. Before we left, only one

person came to say goodbye to us. It was Old Aunt.

When I got to the university, the principal

received me warmly. He asked me whether I had any

problems settling in. I said I needed a room and that I

had just gotten married. I needed a place to start a

family. The principal smiled. He said that at the

moment he would not be able to provide a room for

me, but we could, for the time being, live in the

               collective dormitory of their university.

Then he asked me, “What does your wife do?”

I told him that my wife used to work together

with me in a small middle school affiliated to a coal

mine and that she was actually a graduate from a

famous university in Beijing and had a Master’s

               degree.
