Yu Jihui: “A Stinking Old Ninth – A Tale of the Coal Capital” (updated on July 2020)
I took the letter, sat up from the bed and began to
read. There was only one sentence on the piece of
paper. It read, “Forced love does not last.”
I was beside myself with joy after I read the
letter. Xi Si was still mine. She was not the kind of
lady who only loved power, money and fame.
“Let’s go to post the letter to him! The
regimental commander is expecting it,” she said.
There was a small post office at the corner of our
dormitory building. I rose to my feet and went out of
the bedroom. I went directly to the post office with
Xi Si in high spirits. At the office, Xi Si got a stamp
and pasted it on the envelop. Then she gave the letter
to me and said, “Soapy, put it into the mail box with
your own hands!”
I took it and threw it into the mail box. At this
point, I was at ease. I was a bit assured of myself.
