Yu Jihui: “A Stinking Old Ninth – A Tale of the Coal Capital” (updated on July 2020)

my seat and began to gobble it down. She didn’t

abominate me at all. She seemed really hungry. Ten

minutes later, she had finished all of the supper I left:

half a steamed bread and half a tin of sorghum

               porridge.

Then she said, “Soapy, I’ve eaten all of your

supper. I’m full and I feel warm now, but I’m afraid

               that you will be hungry.”

“I’m all right. I’m all right! You were not

disgusted with me! I’m very happy today. I never

thought that in a world where I have been

discriminated against, there would be a person who

doesn’t put me down. I’m happy indeed!” I said,

               happily and excitedly.

“Why are you discriminated against? I’ve heard

many romantic stories about you, but I don’t trust

them. Could you tell me something about yourself?”

I lowered my head and didn’t know what to say.
