                       English books  were very important to me.



               Without them, I didn’t know how to live. Most of my



               colleagues were originally coal workers. They


               became teachers just by going through a short term


               of training.  They still had a worker’s disposition.



               They would speak loudly,  would curse  each other,



               would sit around to  play  cards while cursing and


               laughing and would smoke together and shoot the



               breeze when there were no classes. I didn’t like them


               and would stay aside at one corner to read. But now,



               to  win Big  Wang’s  heart,  I  had  to  put my English
