members of the security section of the mine, Old

Aunt’s husband and Great Smoker came in. All the

people present at the meeting were shocked. Great

Smoker was lowering her head. Her stomach was flat.

Bear was stupefied and stood there, stock-still. Old

Aunt’s husband stepped up to the platform. He

pushed Bear aside and spoke on behalf of the coal

mine leaders.

“Comrades, Soapy’s incident has spread over the

whole mine. Some people who understand Great

Smoker very well came to me and said that they

suspected it was a trick. So I decided to find out what

the matter was. Great Smoker lived in the guest

house of our mine. I asked one of the staff members

there to watch her secretly. One night, she opened the

room where Great Smoker lived with her spare key

and went into it in the name of checking the room
