Yu Jihui: “A Stinking Old Ninth – A Tale of the Coal Capital” (updated on July 2020)

sprinters, we fell far behind. Soon they disappeared

in the distance. We rushed about in darkness. We

stopped at a big tree, resting a little, puffing and

blowing, still panic-stricken. At the foot of the tree

sat another pair of lovers. They looked at us with

eyes as wide as eggs. We told them that we were

being chased after. The girl student uttered a cry in

panic and fainted. Then we continued to run blindly

and wildly, paying no attention to the girl in a stupor.

The wall of the park was very old. At one place, we

found a large hole on the wall. It was there that we

               escaped.

On the road back to school, we could still hear

the thumping of our hearts. We stopped about forty

meters to the school gate. Under the bright gate

lamps, two security guards were questioning a pair of

students who had just come back from the woods.
